The Medieval Village of Avening (unofficial Royal Town of the Cotswolds), is not more than a couple of miles from Tetbury, perched on a steep hillside of the Gloucestershire Avon. It grew around the Norman Church of the Holy Rood (Holy Cross).

The village church is the only church in Britain to be built by a Queen. Dedicated to the Holy Rood, the church was consecrated in the presence of Queen Matildain 1080.

The population of Avening is just over a 1000, making it the largest village in the South of the Cotswolds. Formerly a cloth-making centre, the village became prosperous during the period of the Cotswold wool trade and mills continued to produce cloth late into the twentieth century.

During September the custom known as "Pig Face Sunday" is celebrated and is said to date back to the consecration of the church.
